Passion Play Oberammergau 2030: History, Tradition and Passion
The Oberammergau Passion Play is undoubtedly the world’s best-known passion play and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Site. These passion plays were first performed in 1634 as a redemption of a vow after surviving the plague. Since 1680 they have been performed every ten years in Oberammergau, usually in the last year of a decade. In the 21st century, the planned performances had to be postponed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic, first to 2022 and then to 2030.
